Fun Fact

Physical Therapy, specifically the Epley maneuver, is the most effective method of vertigo relief.

Understanding Vertigo

Vertigo is a condition that makes you have a spinning sensation – feeling like your immediate surrounding is spinning or swaying. However, it can be debilitating for some people, with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and loss of balance.

Vertigo is typically caused by an imbalance in the inner ear or surrounding nerves and muscles. And the most common cause is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which occurs when fluid builds up in one part of the inner ear or nerve roots, causing dizziness and spinning.

It can also be caused by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or other conditions affecting the brainstem, such as stroke or tumor growth inside the skull or brain. Some people experience recurrent or constant symptoms of vertigo due to an underlying disorder that may require ongoing treatment.

Signs and Symptoms of Vertigo

The sensations of vertigo are often triggered by rapid movements or sudden changes in direction. The visual cortex (part of the brain) interprets these stimuli as movement, causing changes in balance and spatial orientation with time.

Symptoms of vertigo vary depending on the individual’s personal preference and situational factors like vision and hearing levels as well as age, gender, height, and weight.

How a Chiropractor Diagnoses Vertigo

The first step in diagnosing vertigo is an examination by the chiropractor. This includes a thorough history and physical examination, which may consist of neurological tests to evaluate balance and gait.

A chiropractor may also refer you to an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor) for further evaluation if your symptoms don’t resolve with conservative measures. Below are some of the commonly administered tests.

Electrocochleography:This test measures changes in the electrical activity of the inner ear. The results are then compared to the expected based on the patient's age and sex.

Electromyography (EMG):This test measures muscles' electrical activity by recording muscle movements to diagnose conditions such as muscular dystrophy and tremors. In addition, EMG can determine whether certain parts of a patient's nervous system have been affected by injury or disease.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI):Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical test that uses radio waves and magnets to produce detailed images of your body. You can use it to diagnose headaches, vertigo, and other conditions.

Chiropractic Treatment of Vertigo

Chiropractic treatment for vertigo focuses on correcting spinal distortions that may be causing the problem. Chiropractors understand how your spine works and how to restore proper function when it’s out of alignment.
